Why titanium lead times move

A titanium lead time is mostly a melt scheduling problem, and melt scheduling is mostly a sponge supply problem.

Sponge comes first

Titanium sponge is produced by a handful of plants worldwide. A mill buys it months ahead, and when sponge tightens, the mills that hold contracts keep running while spot buyers wait. This is the single largest reason a quoted date moves.

Melts are batched

Vacuum arc remelting runs in campaigns by grade. If your order arrives just after a Grade 5 campaign closes, the next one may be three weeks out — the mill is not busy, it is simply not melting your alloy this week.

What to do about it

Ask which campaign your material is scheduled into, not just for a date. A mill that can name the campaign is telling you something real; one that only quotes a date is telling you an average.
